Hey y'all, so glad to see that so many of you love your gaps, but there are many who haven't come to acceptance yet, so I was thinking that we should start an inspiration list. As we know, diastemas are a manifestation of GENIUS...

I have always hated it

Hi there. I have had a gap in between my front teeth since I was born. I have a large labial frenum and so I suppose a gappy toothed smile was meant to be. When I was 17, the gap got even bigger from the removal of both top wisdom teeth (it's now 2.5 millimeters wide). I feel that it is out of control now and I was thinking of getting some ortho work done.

Thought it may be a good idea to find some more of "my kind" before I do anything drastic.

damn if they do then i must be pretty fucking ugly. im sure my gap stops alot of chicks from talking to me. im thinkin bout gettin braces. and im gettin over the whole Ffffffffffffffffffff and Sssssssssssss thing.

i cant seem to find any real positives to my diastema. ? just found it a disadvantage

I'm a brand-spanking-new member. Just found y'all today. Very excited to see them gappy grins!

Many moons ago -- 1995 -- I started a lil' website called Gap-Toothed (gap-toothed.com), and it grew into a diastematic's delight: interviews with Les Blank (director of Gap-Toothed Women) and Dale Hempel (founder of the International Diastema Club); a bona-fide USPS stamp protest (Vince Lombardi without a gap? Nuh-uh.); the G-List of 1000+ gap-toothed folks (famous and not); and a few other appropriately idiotic features made it what it was, back in the day when I had nothing better to do in my spare time. (Feel free to poke around at archive.org for the legacy/lunacy that is Gap-Toothed culture on the internet...)

I've since mothballed the site (took a wife, bred a gap-toothed kid, took an all-consuming job, yada yada), but found that people were still wanting a connection to others who had a gap. And who am I to stop them. So in late December I started a Yahoo group, which has grown to 16 members; we're adding 1-2 new people a week.

Well here I am today, staring at your grins and wondering where y'all have been all along. I'm glad to have found you and think we may need to do some merging here, if you're interested in that.

So, li'l show of hands: out of curiosity, how many of you are actually Dentally Endowed (in Diastematic fashion), versus wannabes? Inquiring minds pretend they wanna know.

And...just to make sure: is this an insider group, regionally focused on the Bay Area? (We wouldn't want to crash anyone's party.)

If not...would you mind if a gaggle of gappers joined up?

We promise not to bite. And if we do, we'll leave a wonderful little gap-toothed mark. Consider it a personal brand....

i stumbled across this site today and it made me smile. i dont know anyone else with a gap and sometimes feel self concious (despite one of my mates loving my gaps so much she wants to get some herself!) and i know we all doubt ourselves and think, 'i wonder what i would look like without it?' and sometimes we curse it when we bite into something hot and burn ourselves between our teeth (haha a hard dilema to explain to someone who doesnt have a gap) but for all the times ive thought that ive also been told how lucky i am, how one day i will be wealthy or famous and how i am a creative soul. people often remark on my "beautiful" (and cheeky) smile and ive met people who grew up wishing they had a gap. people always want what they dont have, and so if you really think about it, how many people must be jealous of us? theres no point wishing we didnt have gaps, we are the lucky ones after all

After a heated argument over the attractiveness of having a gap, I started searching for a place that appreciates the 'gap' rather than feels shame or ridicule of it. I still have not fully come to terms with having a gap but it no longer bothers me to the point where I don't smile anymore. I come from a long line of gapped-toothed people who are well received everywhere they go. My smile is most often seen as unique and often captures attention of strangers. It is a shame people cannot accept having a gap and tell you to your face that you should 'get it fixed' or ask why you haven't gotten rid of it. Thanks for reading. ---Shawn

did anyone see the episode with the girl and she has a gap in her teeth? They urged her to have it closed (they referring to Tyra and the gang) AND they were even willing to PAY FOR IT!!!! The girl refused to have her gap closed because it was her "trademark" and she said she loved her gapped teeth. But Tyra and the gang told her that if she wanted to continue in the competition she MUST get it closed. My question is this, why are gaps considered so ugly in the modeling industry? It seems like every thing else is acceptable but as soon as someone with a gap walks into the room it's like, "oh hell naw!!! you're gonna have to get that thing closed" What's up with that!?

I have just joined, and I will upload a photo soon, but I had to post quickly and say wow, thanks, and gotta love the internet.
I was googling diastema to explore cosmetic dentistry, and came across your group, and it totally turned me around. One little hit celebrating our "dental superiority" (lol)compared to the thousands advocating change.
I am 40 and my smile has always bothered me subtly, but not enough to do anything about it. A small but constant stressor.
But I am beginning to come out of the closet as it where, and smile with pride!

Meetup: Drinks with Diastemas in the Bay Area and Portland, Oregon.

I'm considering putting together a (first-of-its kind!) get-together / drinks with diastemas sort of thing sometime in the next couple of months.

We'd meet at a location, have a drink, shoot the breeze, discuss our dental superiority and make plans for a global gap-toothed world domination. Who knows, with enough liquor maybe we'd even get frisky enough to pull the chisel treatment on an unsuspecting norm.

Believe it or not, this has never officially happened anywhere before (not that I'm aware of anyway), despite the amazing photo opportunities.

I'm looking at Portland in late April/early May, and the Bay Area (SF? Oak? SJ? Peninsula?) in early or mid-May.

Checking interest levels: who's game? In the area? Alternatively, if you're not in the area, by all means you're encouraged to get something going on your own wherever you are.
