I want to read, write, and exchange stories about the diastema.

This excerpt of "The Diastema Poem" begins to explain my childhood experience and undying love for my gap-toothedness.

The Diastema Poem
by Reshounn L. Foster
(c) 1997

I could blow bubbles through it
I could even slide the tip of my tongue sideways through it

Had a hard time, though, stopping those lollipop sticks from gettin' stuck in it
Had lots of fun with it

They asked if I wanted braces, nuh uh
Never dared let them constrain it and slap them ugly things on it
'Cause I was pleased and proud of it

Younger kids used to ask me bout my missin tooth
I used to get mad and every now and then some of 'em still do -- now I just laugh

As I grew older, old men began to speak their obscenities
Said it meant, "She lies-a-plenty!"
Looked at it and said, "Ooooh weee, baby dat's sexy! Betcha you know how to give good lovin'!"
'Oh really?

Well, I'd quickly roll my eyes away and remind myself that IT
Was inherited through my dad, along with my short stat, cute dimples, and the screwy eyesight I have

But years later, a sunny day and a stroll through the *Hart of the Plaza led me to a sistah
Her smile beamed like mine with the very same aperture
We exchanged grins and she delightfully share with my youth
An ancient, age-old African truth that this IT is a DIASTEMA and
Not just some space 'tween my tooths.

Yeah, it's hereditary, a male-dominant trait, which apparently reveals my strength in this little
Short, shy, shapely shape

"It's a symbol of royalty," she said with her own gap-toothed smile
Said that in Africa it's a symbol of grace, marking my unique, fluent, charismatic style
Never have I covered my mouth in shame or ever refused to smile
Even the slight sound of my name, makes me smile awhile

*I was told by an Nation of Islam sista at Detroit's Hart Plaza in the mid 1990s that the African story of the diastema is this: it is a male dominant trait that means one is the progeny of royal lineage; it is rare for a woman to have one and, if she does, she is is considered to be of strong mind and spirit.

Being gap-toothed was regarded as a sign of a strongly-sexed nature in the Middle Ages as told in The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale from "The Canterbury Tales" by Geoffrey Chaucer. In some African tribes having a gap in your front teeth was a sign of wisdom and in France they call it "les dents du bonheur" (teeth of happiness)! There was even a film made by Les Blank in 1987 called Gap-Toothed Women, which explores different connotations of gap-teeth such as a beauty mark or as a sign of an amorous nature.

I've a gap b/w my two front teeth and hate it. It has been there since I was lil, but I was never bothered by it because back then it was small, but as I got older, it got bigger. I'm very uncomfortable with it and rarely smile with my teeth showing in public and hate that -because I find it not to be too friendly (open-mouth smiles are friendlier, I would say). I considering getting braces, but right now cannot afford them 'cuz they're so darn expensive. A lot of people, including my parents, have told me to leave it and not get braces, but I hate my smile and do not feel confident with this gap. But they do not have a gap/gaps in their teeth, so they do not know how I feel. I also have other gaps in my lower teeth (about 4 of them), but those have never bothered me and do not bother me because they rarely show when I smile or talk. I wish I could be confident like some of you who love your gap, but I'm not and as soon as I have the money, I'm getting braces. In my country, teeth gaps are actually a sign of beauty and widely-acceptable, people love it. But nope, I'm not too fond of mine. Maybe if I was there, I would have a different mindset and it probably wouldn't bother me like it does now, but the culture here is different. Maybe I will grow to love this gap and change my mind about closing it, I don't know. Right now, that isn't likely. I just wish $6000 would fall from the sky.

But the most troubling thing about it is that I want to make it into broadcasting, and I don't want it to be an obstacle that would keep me from getting a job as a TV personality (I remember seeing a YouTube clip of a girl who's in the same major as I am, and one of the critiques she received was that she should get her gap closed, and that worried me, of course)...but thanks for all the encouragement...I'm trying to make it through.

Hi! My name is Molly and I'm here because of the encouragement and support to show off and to be proud of the 'gap' between my teeth. I still have somewhat of a self-concious shyness to it--but it stems from my childhood and the whole 'perfection' standards I grew up with. I once wrote my wealthy grandfather to ask him if he would pay for my braces to fix it but he wrote me back that if he did allow me to get it 'fixed' as I put it, then I would NOT be his little Molly. His daughter, my aunt Molly, also donned the same gap....and he reminded me of this and his love for her. This was the beginning of my acceptance of the way I was made by God and I'm almost there now..this group of acceptance does help though. Hey, if you don't love yourself and accept the you you are how can we accept someone else.
All these comments cause this gap to smile....
Thank you!

Diastemas are sexy, are in sexy people's mouths, they usually have sexy voices too. My dentist, a very good friend told me he would give me one if I really wanted one. I wasn't sure!
I do not know when this started for me, but since high school I guess, whenever I see a person with a diastema I stare, I admire, I lust and I gaze dreamily. I often tell the person how gorgeous it is and I have a hard time looking at their eyes afterwards. More darker skinned people than fair have them , and I have rarely met a shy owner, but some are not so happy about being the owners. I love it, I love it, I love it! Is it really a fetish? I once ran my tongue over, through and in between one, and it is my crazy thing! TO me it means you have sex appeal, and even if you try to mask it, once you open your mouth, I am fixated!
Hello,

I've had a diastema my entire life and I absolutely hate it. I'm 30 years old and I've had braces 3 times and two surgeries to fix the problem. Soon, I'll be getting braces for the 4th time.
When I was a kid in school, I was taunted to no end because of it. I even had one of my own cousins tell me how ugly I was because of it and that she didn't like me because of it. This was when I was 12 and unsure of myself. To this day, we don't talk and we are 30. She's never thought I was good enough or pretty enough for her.

When I look at people, I immediately look at their teeth. I get jealous when I see them altogether. So, now I'm on my journey to perfection. Yes, I've had braces 3 times and every time the gap came back. I've now learned that I have excess gum tissue that needed to be removed in order for my teeth to close.

For those out there who love their gaps, more power to you. But as for me, I want the damn thing to disappear once and for all. Everyone should desire to have beautiful, straight, closed teeth.

I went through what most of you went through as kids, but I had double trouble because beside my already gapped teeth grew a short, pointy tooth resembling a miniature fang. For twenty five yearsI felt like an ugly freak; I covered my mouth when I laughed outloud, ashamed of my snaggleteeth...

When I got a job with dental benefits, my confidence went through the roof - I had all four wisdom teeth extracted, a crown, metal fillings replaced in white, and aesthetic filing to even out the bumps. The day I had the fang tooth made into a beautiful incisor, my really cool former hippie woman dentist asked me if I would like my diastema filled with the leftover material. "NOT ON YOUR LIFE" I exclaimed!

I love my diastema becaues it defines me, punctuates my face, and suits my character.

When I felt a sort of strange burst of feelings appearing, before we said or admitted anything, I wanted to make sure I represented myself honestly.

There had never been a photo of me smiling with teeth. Not even in family photos. I decided to take a smiling-with-teeth photo and sent it to only him. His response was more than I expected. Turns out he was a fan of smiles, and he said mine was the most "perfect, glowing, and beautiful" smile he's seen. Well, hello! That was a shock. When we met in person, I was a ball of nerves. We even had a huge phone conversation over a month before we met in person, where I told him exactly what I was embarrassed of... and a lot of it was my teeth (my gap in my front teeth.) He started saying, "You know what they say about british people's teeth..." and began to share his own insecurities about his and his teeth horror as a kid, wearing a big headgear that closed them up and made them better, but made him feel like he has "rabbit teeth." It was very nice to know that we both felt weird about our teeth.

Before him, I tried invisalign to get rid of my space. It did very little. But it made the gap a tad smaller, so I can live with that... but by a tad smaller, I mean, hardly at all.

I still feel weird about them, but between my husband's praise of my smile and a community like this, I think I should embrace my teeth. Like many others have said, it's what makes me "me."

Plus, cool people like Elvis Costello have diastema.

Hi....I'm Katri (pronunciation key: KAH-tree)
I can thank my mom for my unmistakeable gap. My brother has it too (he even uses gapgrin for one of his email addys).

When I was a kid I didn't like it much because people asked me when my parents were going to let me have braces...and I was devastated when a boy walked up to me in the fourth grade and said, "Hey Katri! You're pretty!"
which of course made me beam,
and then he added, "...ugly!"

I was sure he was talking about the gap. It would be twenty years before I heard the term "diastema".

My mom used to tell me, 'Honey, in Africa it's regarded as a sign of beauty' and stories of how she was regarded as a white Goddess when she lived in Somalia. I appreciated what she was trying to do, but nonetheless we lived in a blue-collar suburb of Portland, Oregon. None of those little bastards in my grade school gave a damn about Africa, or Goddesses, or my feelings.

So I finally talked the parents into taking me to the orthodontist...went through the whole braces thing...and
THE GAP CAME BACK.

yes.

But in my adult life I've learned to appreciate it. I even met Les Blank, the filmmmaker who produced "Gap Toothed Women." After I saw the film I realized wow, I'm at least as creative and interesting as they are. No, I mean WE are.
I'm happy to be part of the tribe of the Gap Toothed Women
