Hi everyone,
My name is Molly and I love diastemas. Why do I love diastemas, you ask? Well, let's see...
I remember one time my mom was saying how sexy some man was and how she really liked his *diastema*.
I said, "Mom, what's a diastema?" She said, "Honey, it's the gap in his teeth!"
"Coool!" I said,
and ever since then I've been totally obsessed with the beauty and glamor of our favorite delight....

Mon, August 1, 2005 - 7:59 AMHey I'm Dylan and I found this tribe through the happy brigade tribe and loved it. So I planted my self her and am enjoying it. I am working on a project to get my girlfriends uncle's pic on here. He is awsome and hilarious with some delicous diastemas. There is one pic of when he was Mr. Macho park ranger and it is hilarious. Its the hair in the wind on raft with the shoulders back type thing.

Re: Introduce yourselves! Why are you here?
Mon, September 12, 2005 - 7:21 PMHi....I'm Katri (pronunciation key: KAH-tree)
I can thank my mom for my unmistakeable gap. My brother has it too (he even uses gapgrin for one of his email addys).
When I was a kid I didn't like it much because people asked me when my parents were going to let me have braces...and I was devastated when a boy walked up to me in the fourth grade and said, "Hey Katri! You're pretty!"
which of course made me beam,
and then he added, "...ugly!"
I was sure he was talking about the gap. It would be twenty years before I heard the term "diastema".
My mom used to tell me, 'Honey, in Africa it's regarded as a sign of beauty' and stories of how she was regarded as a white Goddess when she lived in Somalia. I appreciated what she was trying to do, but nonetheless we lived in a blue-collar suburb of Portland, Oregon. None of those little bastards in my grade school gave a damn about Africa, or Goddesses, or my feelings.
So I finally talked the parents into taking me to the orthodontist...went through the whole braces thing...and
THE GAP CAME BACK.
yes.
But in my adult life I've learned to appreciate it. I even met Les Blank, the filmmmaker who produced "Gap Toothed Women." After I saw the film I realized wow, I'm at least as creative and interesting as they are. No, I mean WE are.
I'm happy to be part of the tribe of the Gap Toothed Women
...or chicks with a killer diastema, as it were. -

Sat, May 13, 2006 - 6:38 PMHey, I'm Doug and I have a sweet gap,
I'm here because I was just listening to This American Life on NPR and some guy was talking about how he has a website dedicated to gap-toothed folk. I had to check it out and I came across this site instead. Glad I did! Before I was always a bit insecure about my gap, and still am I guess. This is honestly the first time I've seen diastema shed in a good light.
I'm home!

Wed, May 24, 2006 - 5:56 PMHi!
my name is Ashlee, I have a diastema, but this is probably the first time i've ever heard my gap has a fancy name.
I've had my gap all my life and I'm still in the middle about loving and hating it. I use to get a lot of crap from boys about it, then i learned to not care.. i use to beg my parents to let me get braces but we could never afford now I feel like its apart of me and dont know what I would do without it!! -

Re: Introduce yourselves! Why are you here?
Thu, November 2, 2006 - 2:09 AMI wanted to find out if this was a trait inherited, if genes play a big part in it, how many generations are there with this trait, why do I have it, why my kids have it, is it a scientific experiment we dont know about, is it conspiracy in the medical profession to a experiment done wrong, or they tried to clone this trait too many times?
Ok my mind wonders a lot just curious to others that have it..
I am glad I am not the only one, remember when I thought I was as a child and getting picked on because of it.

Re: Introduce yourselves! Why are you here?
Sat, December 16, 2006 - 9:41 AMMy name is Ashlee, and I absolutely LOVE my gap!
I use to be self conscience and never smile but I grew up and relized that if people weren't gonna like me because of my diastema then they were missing out on the coolest girl ever!
I use to ask my boyfriend if it bothered him and he confirmed I wouldn't be the same without it!
I just hope one day, I can pass it to my little ones :)

Re: Introduce yourselves! Why are you here?
Tue, April 24, 2007 - 5:10 AMWow! Oh, wow!
I have always been severely self-conscious. Up until I met the man who has now become my husband, I was very weird about smiling. Him and I met over the internet (oh, how "in" it sounds nowadays ... but I really don't know how it happened, it was that random, but I don't care! He's too great. Of course I wouldn't have met him in my home state, let alone my own country.)
When I felt a sort of strange burst of feelings appearing, before we said or admitted anything, I wanted to make sure I represented myself honestly.
There had never been a photo of me smiling with teeth. Not even in family photos. I decided to take a smiling-with-teeth photo and sent it to only him. His response was more than I expected. Turns out he was a fan of smiles, and he said mine was the most "perfect, glowing, and beautiful" smile he's seen. Well, hello! That was a shock. When we met in person, I was a ball of nerves. We even had a huge phone conversation over a month before we met in person, where I told him exactly what I was embarrassed of... and a lot of it was my teeth (my gap in my front teeth.) He started saying, "You know what they say about british people's teeth..." and began to share his own insecurities about his and his teeth horror as a kid, wearing a big headgear that closed them up and made them better, but made him feel like he has "rabbit teeth." It was very nice to know that we both felt weird about our teeth.
Before him, I tried invisalign to get rid of my space. It did very little. But it made the gap a tad smaller, so I can live with that... but by a tad smaller, I mean, hardly at all.
I still feel weird about them, but between my husband's praise of my smile and a community like this, I think I should embrace my teeth. Like many others have said, it's what makes me "me."
Plus, cool people like Elvis Costello have diastema.

Re: Introduce yourselves! Why are you here?
Sun, July 8, 2007 - 2:55 PMHello everyone,
I went through what most of you went through as kids, but I had double trouble because beside my already gapped teeth grew a short, pointy tooth resembling a miniature fang. For twenty five yearsI felt like an ugly freak; I covered my mouth when I laughed outloud, ashamed of my snaggleteeth...
When I got a job with dental benefits, my confidence went through the roof - I had all four wisdom teeth extracted, a crown, metal fillings replaced in white, and aesthetic filing to even out the bumps. The day I had the fang tooth made into a beautiful incisor, my really cool former hippie woman dentist asked me if I would like my diastema filled with the leftover material. "NOT ON YOUR LIFE" I exclaimed!
I love my diastema becaues it defines me, punctuates my face, and suits my character.
Darlings, we're beautiful oddities!
~Leah

Re: Introduce yourselves! Why are you here?
Wed, July 25, 2007 - 6:22 PMHello,
I've had a diastema my entire life and I absolutely hate it. I'm 30 years old and I've had braces 3 times and two surgeries to fix the problem. Soon, I'll be getting braces for the 4th time.
When I was a kid in school, I was taunted to no end because of it. I even had one of my own cousins tell me how ugly I was because of it and that she didn't like me because of it. This was when I was 12 and unsure of myself. To this day, we don't talk and we are 30. She's never thought I was good enough or pretty enough for her.
When I look at people, I immediately look at their teeth. I get jealous when I see them altogether. So, now I'm on my journey to perfection. Yes, I've had braces 3 times and every time the gap came back. I've now learned that I have excess gum tissue that needed to be removed in order for my teeth to close.
For those out there who love their gaps, more power to you. But as for me, I want the damn thing to disappear once and for all. Everyone should desire to have beautiful, straight, closed teeth. -

Re: Introduce yourselves! Why are you here?
Mon, August 27, 2007 - 9:20 PMwell well well,
I cannot believe that this is a tribe! I have only met two or three people in my life that agreed with me on this one. Diastemas are sexy, are in sexy people's mouths, they usually have sexy voices too. My dentist, a very good friend told me he would give me one if I really wanted one. I wasn't sure!
I do not know when this started for me, but since high school I guess, whenever I see a person with a diastema I stare, I admire, I lust and I gaze dreamily. I often tell the person how gorgeous it is and I have a hard time looking at their eyes afterwards. More darker skinned people than fair have them , and I have rarely met a shy owner, but some are not so happy about being the owners. I love it, I love it, I love it! Is it really a fetish? I once ran my tongue over, through and in between one, and it is my crazy thing! TO me it means you have sex appeal, and even if you try to mask it, once you open your mouth, I am fixated! And something wonderful happens!
Well, here's to all of you, keep on smiling! You will keep us on smiling!
Sincerely, me, G :)

Re: Introduce yourselves! Why are you here?
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 7:51 AMHI.
I'm Danielle
I have a diastema and I'm sick of people saying shit about me and calling me stuff like "quarters" and "50cent" because they think i can put 2 quarters inbetween the gap. An ex bf, his brothers gf, and the brother came up with that when we were at a mutual friends father's funeral. Recently he talked about it randomly with a friend of his from work ... who happened to know me and well it got back. It's just so frustrating. I figured that at 20 people would have grown up.

Re: Introduce yourselves! Why are you here?
Sat, January 26, 2008 - 3:14 PMHello All
I just recently found out what my "gap" was called and decided to look it up. I have always had comments about my diastema mostly positive. Mine has been passed down from my mother's side. I love it. I recently got a retainer for my teeth because I noticed that mine was getting wider. I didn't want my teeth to go crooked, but I made sure that it will not be closing my gap just maintaining it!
Nice to meet you all!

Re: Introduce yourselves! Why are you here?
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 5:53 AMHi! My name is Molly and I'm here because of the encouragement and support to show off and to be proud of the 'gap' between my teeth. I still have somewhat of a self-concious shyness to it--but it stems from my childhood and the whole 'perfection' standards I grew up with. I once wrote my wealthy grandfather to ask him if he would pay for my braces to fix it but he wrote me back that if he did allow me to get it 'fixed' as I put it, then I would NOT be his little Molly. His daughter, my aunt Molly, also donned the same gap....and he reminded me of this and his love for her. This was the beginning of my acceptance of the way I was made by God and I'm almost there now..this group of acceptance does help though. Hey, if you don't love yourself and accept the you you are how can we accept someone else.
All these comments cause this gap to smile....
Thank you!
Molly B -

Re: Introduce yourselves! Why are you here?
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 9:59 PMHi!
I'm Isis and I too have had my share of mockery and ridicule because of my gap. Today I found out that my gap is called diastema, after 20 odd years! I'm so glad that there are other people who like their gaps. After years of feeling insecure, I decided to find all the cool, famous gap-toothed people on tv like Madonna, David Letterman, Luis Miguel (until he fixed it.) etc.
I still want to get mine a little closer so that a nickle doesn't fit in there bu I'm not sure I want to get rid of it completely. I will definetly try to rock my diastema proudly now.
